DEFECT: Improperly sized circuit breaker
An electrical circuit in a home is specifically designed to handle a specific maximum current which is rated in amps. The wire, connected devices and circuit breakers all have to be rated for the same load to work safely.
The safety mechanism and control for each circuit is the circuit breaker, this breaker has to be correctly sized to provide the proper protection in the event of an over-current situation or short circuit.
If a circuit breaker is over-sized for the wire it is connected to then the wire will overheat before the circuit breaker can trip, this is a very serious dangerous problem that can lead to fire. If you have circuit breakers that are improperly sized for the circuit, you should contact a licensed electrical contractor and have it repaired immediately.
Some common causes of improperly sized breakers are:
- Oversight – wrong breaker installed inadvertently
- Smaller breaker keeps tripping so a larger breaker is installed (Very dangerous)
